At West Witney WI we enjoy a varied range of activities. They are too numerous to go on our activities page but we hope this page gives you a flavour of the fun we have!
In 2013
In February we celebrated our 20th anniversary
in March we planted 2 walnut saplings in Deer Park Wood
Before Christmas we watched a festive floral art demonstration
Also during the year we took part in a varied programme of talks and activities:
We were entertained immensely with Carol Bunyan's experiences of working for the BBC, and her successful career as a playwright, which led her to write her first novel, 'The Choir Mistress' loosely based on a choir in Witney.
At our September meeting, Judit Brody gave us an introduction to the benefits of Tai Chi. We heard about its origins and of Judit's travels around the globe.
A report was heard on the very successful visit attended by several members to the Supreme Court & Somerset House in London.
At our August meeting we were entertained by Judy Gibbons and Wanda Oberman who shared their experiences of Antarctica and the Falklands with us.
in July members were given an insight into the World of a Forensic Scientist, by our speaker Amy Kuzemka, from LGC Forensics.
Amy gave an informative talk on the forensic processes she undertakes when supporting various agencies- she also persuaded one of our members to 'model' the specialist clothing required for a forensic scientist. We all enjoyed the talk and she even dispelled quite a few myths about the various detective programmes we all watch! Furthermore we were pleased to donate Amy's speaker's fee to a charity of her choice.
A report was heard, on our recent members Garden Party, which everyone enjoyed, despite the inclement weather! Our annual tombola stall at Witney Gala went very well, the hot weather such a contrast to last year's very wet day.
During July and August the WI held a whole host of events including a Coffee morning at Cogges, a River boat trip, an evening get together at the Windrush Pub and lunch at the Four Pillars.
At June's meeting our speaker was Rosemary Phillimore, who was warmly welcomed by members as she had stepped in at very short notice.
Her talk, 'A Life Changing Experience, Volunteer Work in SE Asia' was in two parts - firstly she told us about her experiences of volunteering for VSO overseas in Indonesia with its many challenges and highlights. She then spoke about her involvement with The Joe Homan Charity. This is a small charity that she supports through both her fundraising and project work. Rosemary was informative and entertaining and we all felt uplifted by her passion and energy for the causes she supports.
Other events in May included a coffee morning at Witney Hospital, the Garden Party, Lunch at The Four Pillars and a Pub evening, especially aimed at members who find it difficult to attend the coffee morning/afternoon sessions.
At the meeting in May a talk was given by Witney Food Bank, outlining how they are contributing their efforts within the local community.
At April's meeting we welcomed our speaker Lynda Warren. Her talk on the 'Mystery of Agatha Christie' was both entertaining and informative, offering a real insight into the author herself, as well as her many books and characters.
In 2012 we gathered together in red, white and blue to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee
